Say the word dyslexia and most people picture a child seeing letters backward. The b becomes a d, “was” becomes “saw,” and the whole thing sounds like a problem with the eyes.
That picture is wrong, and it costs kids years.
Letter reversals are a normal part of early writing. Most children flip b and d sometimes through first grade, and plenty of kids who reverse letters read just fine. Reversals alone tell you almost nothing.
Dyslexia is not a vision problem. Children with dyslexia see the page exactly the way other children do. Their eyes deliver the letters perfectly. The trouble starts after that, in the part of the brain that connects those letters to sounds.
Dyslexia is a language-based learning difference. It is neurobiological, it runs in families, and it centers on one specific skill: processing the sounds inside words.
Reading is built on speech. Before a child can match letters to sounds, their brain has to be able to grab hold of the sounds themselves. Pull the word “ship” apart into /sh/ /i/ /p/. Notice that “cat” and “cup” start the same way. Hold a new word in mind long enough to sound it out. That skill set is called phonological processing, and in dyslexia, it is the piece that doesn’t work smoothly.

They Have One.: the brain files every speech sound into its own slot, and reading depends on those files being clean and easy to reach. In dyslexia, the files are hard to reach. The child knows the word when they hear it. Getting to it from print is the struggle.
Here’s something most people never learn: your brain is not born ready to read.
Spoken language is different. Barring injury, a child’s brain comes wired to connect sound and meaning. Talking develops on its own, without anyone teaching it. Reading has no such wiring. There is no reading center you are born with. Every reader has to build one.
What the brain builds is a bridge. On one side is the region that takes in the symbol, the letter the eye sees. On the other side is the sound system, the same phonological filing system reading depends on. Learning to read means constructing a brand-new pathway between them, so that a printed symbol instantly triggers the right sound. Practice lays that bridge down and makes it automatic. In a skilled reader, it fires so fast that reading feels effortless. We know this pathway is built and not inborn because the brain region that recognizes written words can only be found in people who have already learned to read.
In dyslexia, the sound side of that bridge works differently. The phonological system is disorganized and harder to reach, so as the child tries to build the connection, one of the two anchor points keeps shifting. The bridge is being laid to unstable ground. The sound-to-symbol links form slowly, incompletely, or wrong, no matter how clearly the child sees the page or how hard they try.
This is why practice alone doesn’t fix it, and why “just read more” fails these kids. You cannot build a stable bridge to an unstable foundation. The teaching has to go back and organize the sound system itself, so there is solid ground to connect the symbols to. That is what structured, sound-based intervention does, and it is why the right teaching changes the outcome.
Dyslexia changes costume as children get older.
If several of those sound familiar across the years, that is a pattern worth evaluating, not a phase.
Dyslexia has nothing to do with intelligence. Bright, verbal children are often the last ones identified because they compensate. They memorize whole words, lean on context, and charm their way through read-alouds. The scores stay just high enough that nobody looks closer. Meanwhile the effort behind the compensating is enormous, and it shows up at home as homework battles and a kid who says they hate reading.
Strong spoken language does not protect a child from dyslexia. Sometimes it just hides it longer.
Children do not outgrow dyslexia. The brain doesn’t reorganize its sound system on its own. It needs explicit, structured teaching that connects speech sounds to print, over and over, until the connections become automatic. The good news is that this kind of teaching works, and the earlier it starts, the less ground there is to make up. Every “let’s give it another year” widens the gap between where the child is and where their classmates are heading.
Because dyslexia is a language problem at its root, the evaluation has to look at language, all of it: the sound system, vocabulary, grammar, memory, and how each piece connects to reading and spelling. That full picture is what shows you what’s driving the struggle and exactly what to teach.
If something about your child’s reading hasn’t sat right, trust that instinct. It is usually right.
